video demonstrating a “brown coat” (Hikizuri) of japanese clay plastering. Watch the efficient movement of the master!
Japan has a long tradition using earth as a building material. The Hikizuri, a base plaster mix for interiors, is made out of clay, sand, hemp fibre and seaweed glue. The influence of the seaweed glue in the mix is comparable with the effect of the methyl cellulose we use nowadays: it is used to increase the water retention and it is giving more plasticity – what can be seen very well in this video.
